Sometimes the work isn't a rebuild. It's tightening what's already there.
A long-established South West accountancy practice serving regional SMEs
Not every SEO win starts with ripping up the website. This South West accountancy firm had a perfectly reasonable site already. They didn't need a rebuild. They needed the right corners tightened. Six months later, impressions are up 73% and the rankings are moving into striking range.
Where the south west accountant started
An established practice, well-known in their region, with a clear focus on SME clients. Their challenge was the gap between what searchers were typing in (‘accountants for small business’, ‘SME accountants near me’, region-specific terms) and what their service pages were actually optimised for. They were appearing in search results, but mostly on page three. Average position 29.6.
The challenge for the south west accountant
The diagnosis was the impressions-only zone. That's the SEO equivalent of standing in a shop window where almost nobody walks past. Some search engines were showing the firm to potential clients, but not enough of those impressions were translating into clicks because the rankings were too far down the page.
The opportunity, though, was real. Search demand for SME accountancy services in their region was healthy and growing. Most of their direct competitors were running similarly generic ‘accounting services’ content. Tightening the right pages would move the firm into the conversation.
What we did
No rebuild. No flashy redesign. Just the boring, leveraged work that actually moves rankings.
Metas tightened across priority service pages. Page titles and meta descriptions rewritten so each one clearly signals what the page is about and what the searcher will get if they click. SEO basics, but done properly for the specific queries SMEs use.
On-page intent sharpened. Each priority service page sharpened around a single job to be done. Less ‘we do everything’, more ‘here is exactly how we help small business owners with corporation tax’.
Supporting content for SME-specific queries. Content built around the questions a busy SME owner actually types in when they're shopping for an accountant. Bookkeeping, payroll, year-end accounts, all framed for the SME audience rather than corporate finance teams.
Local SEO foundations. Google Business Profile fully optimised. Local citations cleaned and kept consistent. Region-specific content embedded into the priority pages.
Six months on
Six months in, impressions climbed from 31,900 to 55,300 (a lift of 73%). Organic clicks rose more modestly from 369 to 422 (up 14%). And the average position moved from 29.6 to 21.6. That last number is the one that matters most.
How it shows up in search
Position 21.6 sits at the bottom of page two. The next phase of work is about pulling those rankings up another five or six places, because that's where the click curve really turns. The 73% impressions lift is the leading indicator that the climb is happening.
Striking range (page two, primed for the next push):
- Accountants in their region
- SME accountants
- Small business accountants
Why this worked
For any established firm with a perfectly fine website that just isn't pulling its weight in search, the lesson is that you probably don't need to start over. The highest-leverage moves are usually the boring ones: clear metas, sharp on-page intent, supporting content that matches real search behaviour. Done in the right order, that's enough to lift impressions by three quarters in six months.
Three things this case study tells us
- Impressions are the leading indicator. If your impressions are climbing faster than your clicks, your rankings are climbing into striking range. That is the signal that the next phase of the work will compound into real traffic growth.
- Tighten before you rebuild. If the site fundamentals are sound, the highest ROI work is usually meta-level tightening and on-page intent sharpening. Save the rebuild for when there's a structural problem.
- Local plus specialism wins twice. Region plus a clear sub-specialism (SME, family business, sole trader) is a much more defensible position than ‘accountants near me’ on its own.
