Domain Authority, explained properly.
What Domain Authority is
Domain Authority (DA) is a search ranking score developed by Moz that predicts how well a website will rank in search engine results pages. It runs on a logarithmic scale from 1 to 100, with higher scores indicating a greater ability to rank. The score is shaped by the number and quality of backlinks pointing to the site, the site's content, and other technical SEO factors. The page-level equivalent is Page Authority.
Why it matters, and its limits
DA is useful as a comparison metric. It helps you predict ranking potential, benchmark your site against competitors, evaluate link prospects and track a trend over time. A higher score also signals credibility to users, and a strong backlink profile that lifts DA tends to lift real SEO performance alongside it. The key caveat: DA does not directly influence rankings, because Google does not use it. Treat it as a directional health check, not the target itself.
How to improve Domain Authority
1. **Build high-quality backlinks.** Earn links from authoritative, relevant sites in your industry through structured link building. The number of linking root domains matters more than raw link count. 2. **Create high-quality content.** Valuable, shareable content attracts backlinks naturally and improves the user engagement that supports DA. 3. **Improve on-page SEO.** Optimise title tags, meta descriptions, headers and images so search engines understand your content and users have a better experience. 4. **Enhance technical SEO.** Keep the site crawlable, mobile-friendly and fast. Fix broken links and implement structured data. 5. **Monitor and disavow toxic backlinks.** Watch your backlink profile and, where there is clear evidence, use a disavow file to remove harmful links.
Common Domain Authority mistakes
- Chasing quantity of backlinks over quality; links from spammy or irrelevant sites can lower DA. - Neglecting content quality, which limits your ability to attract links. - Ignoring technical SEO, which stops search engines crawling and indexing the site well. Domain Authority: common questions.
Is Domain Authority used by Google?
No. Google has stated repeatedly that DA is not part of its ranking algorithm. DA is a Moz score that approximates ranking ability based on backlink data. Other vendors like Ahrefs and SEMrush have similar metrics (Domain Rating, Authority Score). They are directional, not authoritative.
Why does DA matter then?
As a comparison metric. DA is useful for benchmarking your site against competitors, evaluating link prospects and tracking a trend over time. A site with DA 50 generally has a stronger link profile than one with DA 25, which correlates with ranking potential, even though Google itself does not use the score.
How do I increase DA?
By earning quality backlinks. DA is calculated primarily from your backlink profile: the number of linking root domains, the quality of those domains, and the strength of the links themselves. Improving DA means doing the same things that improve actual SEO, such as creating link-worthy content, earning press coverage and building genuine relationships.
Is a higher DA always better?
Generally, but not absolutely. DA is heavily weighted toward overall site authority, which does not always translate to ranking on specific keywords. A focused niche site with DA 30 can outrank a generic DA 60 site for relevant searches if the content depth and topical authority are stronger.
