Google Rewrites Search: Why It's Now Search Everywhere

At Google I/O on 21 May 2026, Google confirmed that AI-generated results now sit at the top of the search results page by default, with the traditional list of blue links underneath. The search box is being rebuilt around conversation and multi-format input, new information agents monitor the web for users, and agentic tools can now book and even phone businesses on a user's behalf. This is a redesign of the front door to the internet, and the work to stay visible has shifted accordingly.

Key takeaways
•AI-generated results are now the default top of Google's results page; blue links sit underneath.
•Gemini 3.5 Flash becomes the default model powering AI Mode globally.
•The new Intelligent Search box accepts text, images, files, videos or whole Chrome tabs.
•Agentic booking and agentic calling let Google act on a user's behalf.
•Being cited inside an AI Overview now matters as much as ranking in a list of links.

At Google I/O on 21 May 2026, Google confirmed that AI-generated results now sit at the top of the search results page by default, with the traditional list of blue links underneath. The search box is being rebuilt around conversation, follow-ups, and multi-format input. New "information agents" will monitor the web for users, and agentic tools can now book and even phone businesses on a user's behalf. This isn't a feature update. It's a redesign of the front door to the internet. The work to stay visible has shifted accordingly, and we've been doing that work for the last 12 months.

What Google actually announced

You ask a question. Google gives you an answer at the top. Sometimes you click through to a website. Often you don't. That behaviour is now official. At Google I/O 2026, Elizabeth Reid (Google's VP of Search) called it "the next step in our journey to bring together the best of a search engine with the best of AI." The honest translation: the search engine has just been replaced by an AI engine that still links out to websites.

The specifics matter, so here they are:

  • Gemini 3.5 Flash becomes the default model powering AI Mode globally.
  • The Intelligent Search box dynamically expands and accepts text, images, files, videos, or whole Chrome tabs. Google itself called it "the biggest upgrade in over 25 years."
  • Information agents monitor the web for updates on topics users care about, summarising changes back to them.
  • Agentic booking expands beyond restaurants into local services and experiences.
  • Agentic calling means Google can phone a business on a user's behalf to get information or make a booking.
  • Generative UI builds custom visual tools, simulations, and dashboards on the fly, in response to the question.
  • Personal Intelligence expands to roughly 200 countries and 98 languages.
  • Most of these features begin rolling out this summer.

Blue links aren't dead. Google has been clear users still get "a range of results, just like today." But they're now sitting under the AI Overview rather than being the whole page.

What this actually means for your business

  1. Being on page one of a ranked list is no longer the only goal. Being cited inside an AI Overview, picked up by AI Mode, or quoted in a generative UI panel is arguably more valuable now, because that's the answer most users will see first.
  2. Click-through rates will keep falling on informational queries. If Google answers the question directly, the user has no reason to visit your blog post. Now its job is to earn the citation, build topical authority, and back up your expertise to the AI systems doing the citing.
  3. Brand mentions, citations, and trustable [structured data](/glossary/schema-markup) matter more than ever. AI systems pull from the highest-trust sources. If your site doesn't make your expertise unambiguous, clear authors, named case studies, real reviews, proper schema, fresh content, you don't make the cut.
  4. Commercial queries still drive clicks. "Best electrician near me" still needs a directory or a website to act on. The traffic that survives is the traffic that's ready to buy.

Why "SEO" doesn't quite cover it anymore

"Search Engine Optimisation" implies one search engine. The reality in 2026 is that the people you want to reach are searching across Google, Bing, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Google's AI Mode, Apple Intelligence, voice assistants, and any number of vertical AI tools. The same question gets asked in ten different places. You either show up across them, or you don't.

The phrase we've been using is Search Everywhere Optimisation. Same acronym, broader job. It captures the actual work: making sure your brand, your expertise, and your answers are visible across every surface a buyer might use to find someone like you. It overlaps heavily with what the industry now calls Generative Engine Optimisation and Answer Engine Optimisation.

What we've been doing for the last 12 months

  • Structured data audits and rebuilds, so AI systems can parse who you are and what you do.
  • Author signals and E-E-A-T reinforcement, because AI Overviews lean heavily on identifiable expertise.
  • FAQ-style content blocks with proper FAQ schema, which get cited disproportionately often by AI systems.
  • Topical clusters and content hubs, rather than scattered one-off blog posts, because depth on a focused topic outranks breadth in AI retrieval.
  • Named case studies and original research, both because Google rewards them and because AI systems quote them.
  • Citation and entity-level work, getting client brands and named experts mentioned across industry publications, directories, and structured sources.

The one thing we're still waiting on

AI reporting is still not very good. Tracking impressions and clicks in traditional search is a solved problem. Tracking how often your brand gets cited in AI Overviews, how often you appear in AI Mode responses, or whether ChatGPT recommends you when someone asks for a Bristol SEO agency, is much harder. The tools that exist are early, expensive, or both. Several promising platforms are in beta, and we expect a usable AI visibility reporting tool to land within the next six months. For now we use a combination of manual prompt testing, brand mention monitoring, and structured tracking where we can.

What you should do

If you're already a client, nothing immediately. The work we've been doing across the last 12 months is exactly the right work for this moment. If you're not a client and you're reading this thinking "I have no idea whether my site is set up to be cited by AI," that's worth a conversation.

Common questions

Is SEO dead now that Google has gone all-in on AI?

No, the opposite. SEO is more important than ever, but the work has expanded beyond ranking in blue links. The goal now includes being cited inside AI Overviews, recommended by AI Mode, and picked up by other AI assistants like ChatGPT and Perplexity.

What is Search Everywhere Optimisation?

It is the practice of making sure your brand and content are visible across every search surface your buyers use, not just Google's blue links. That includes AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Apple Intelligence, voice assistants, and vertical AI tools.

Will my website still get traffic from Google?

Yes, but the mix shifts. Informational queries will send fewer clicks because the user gets the answer at the top. Commercial queries still drive clicks because the user needs to act on the result.

How do I know if my site is being cited by AI?

Honestly, with difficulty. The tools for tracking AI citations are early. We use a combination of manual prompt testing across the major AI systems, brand mention monitoring, and structured tracking where it's available.

What should I do right now if I'm worried about AI search?

Start with the unsexy basics: structured data, named authors with credentials, FAQ blocks with schema, depth of coverage on the topics you want to be known for, and citations from authoritative sources in your niche.
