GlossaryAbove the Fold (SEO)

Above the Fold (SEO)

Above the fold is the part of a webpage or search results page that is visible without scrolling. The term comes from newspaper layout. In SEO it matters in two places: where your result sits on the SERP, and where your most important content sits on your own pages.

Above the Fold (SEO), explained properly.

•Only around 20% of above-the-fold space on commercial searches is now traditional organic listings.
•Even a position 1 organic result can sit below the fold: on smartphone the median rank-1 is 616 pixels down.
•The largest visible element above the fold is what Google measures for Largest Contentful Paint.
•The fold varies by device, so responsive design decides what stays visible.

Above the fold on the SERP

Above-the-fold space on a Google results page is now dominated by paid ads, AI Overviews and shopping features. As of 2026, only about 20% of above-the-fold space on commercial searches is traditional organic listings. Even ranking position 1 organically, you may still be below the fold: - On laptop, only 65% of organic rank-1 results sit above a typical fold. - On smartphone, the median organic rank-1 sits at 616 pixels down, already below most viewports. Tracking how far down the page your result appears is part of the wider pixel position conversation, and modern SERP features are the main reason organic listings keep getting pushed down.

Above the fold on your pages

For your own pages, above the fold matters for: - **Engagement signals.** If users do not see relevant content immediately, they bounce, and bounces feed back into rankings. - **Core Web Vitals.** The largest visible element above the fold is what Google measures for Largest Contentful Paint (LCP). You can test any URL with PageSpeed Insights. - **Conversion rate.** Pages that put their primary value proposition above the fold typically convert better, a foundational principle of conversion rate optimisation. - **Responsive layouts.** The fold differs by device, so responsive design decisions directly determine what sits above it.

Common questions

Above the Fold (SEO): common questions.

How big is 'the fold' in 2026?

It varies by device. Typical desktop fold is 800 to 1000 pixels, laptop 600 to 900 pixels, and smartphone 600 to 700 pixels, with some larger phones reaching 800 or more. There is no single fold, so design and SEO need to account for the range.

Is above the fold a Google ranking factor?

Indirectly. Google's page layout algorithm from 2012 can demote pages with too many ads above the fold. Beyond that, above-the-fold engagement signals feed into ranking systems.

Should the most important content always be above the fold?

Generally yes for landing pages and service pages. For blog content, above the fold should answer the user's question or strongly hint that the answer follows. Hiding all content below a giant hero image is a common mistake.

How do I check what's above the fold on my pages?

Use Chrome DevTools device emulation or services that simulate different viewport sizes. PageSpeed Insights also shows the LCP element. Test on real mobile devices for the most accurate read.

“I've had the pleasure of working with Chris on several SEO projects for my websites in the health field. He was definitely been able to demystify things so that I felt able to make decisions with him and feel confident they were the right ones. For a non-techie, that is worth gold! I look forward to working with Chris again and warmly recommend him to anyone who - like me - is unsure about all things SEO.”

Biliana Avramova

“We've been working closely with Chris, Hannah and the team for over 12 months now. As a small company with ambitious growth plans, it was incredibly important that we made the right choice on who to trust with our SEO. 18 months later, we're totally thrilled with our experience so far and our growing online presence within our market. We'd happily recommend BTT and their services to other SMEs. Drop them an enquiry!”
