AI Overview

An AI Overview (formerly Search Generative Experience) is Google's AI-generated answer box at the top of search results for many queries. It synthesises information from multiple sources into a single response, usually with citations back to the sites it drew from. As of 2026 they appear on roughly 16% of Google searches and dominate informational results.

AI Overviews appear on roughly 16% of Google searches and over 30% of informational queries.
They are powered by Gemini models plus retrieval-augmented generation (RAG).
They push traditional organic listings well below the fold, so being cited inside them matters.
Transactional queries such as 'buy X' or 'X near me' are much less likely to trigger one.

In depth

AI Overview, explained properly.

•AI Overviews appear on roughly 16% of Google searches and over 30% of informational queries.
•They are powered by Gemini models plus retrieval-augmented generation (RAG).
•They push traditional organic listings well below the fold, so being cited inside them matters.
•Transactional queries such as 'buy X' or 'X near me' are much less likely to trigger one.

How AI Overviews work

AI Overviews use Google's Gemini models combined with retrieval-augmented generation (RAG). When a user enters an informational query, Google retrieves the most relevant pages from its index, feeds them to the model, and the model generates a synthesised answer with citations to the original sources. The result takes significant pixel space at the top of the SERP, often pushing organic listings well below the fold. Understanding SERP features and tracking pixel position matters more than ever.

What triggers an AI Overview?

Three signals consistently trigger one: - **Informational intent:** "how does X work", "what is Y", "why do Z". Match your content to search intent. - **Complex or multi-part queries:** questions needing synthesis from several sources. - **Topics with rich, structured content:** health, finance, technology, education and similar verticals. Direct transactional queries are less likely to show an AI Overview because the user wants to act, not learn.

How to get cited in an AI Overview

1. **Front-load the direct answer.** The first 200 words should answer the query directly. 2. **Use clear structure.** H2 and H3 headings, FAQ blocks and ordered lists. 3. **Include specific data.** Statistics from credible sources lift citation rates by 30 to 40%. 4. **Build topical authority.** Multiple interlinked pages on the same topic signal expertise. 5. **Add structured data.** Schema markup helps Google parse content correctly. Many of these techniques overlap with Answer Engine Optimisation (AEO) and Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO). We helped a Bristol accountancy firm get cited across multiple AI Overview answers.

Common questions

AI Overview: common questions.

How often do AI Overviews appear in search results?

As of 2026, AI Overviews appear in roughly 16% of all Google searches. The figure rises above 30% on informational queries and falls under 5% on direct transactional searches.

Do AI Overviews hurt organic clicks?

Often, yes. Research has found that 93% of AI search sessions end without a click to any website. The exception is that AI Overviews can drive higher-quality clicks when users want to verify or dig deeper into cited sources.

Can I opt out of AI Overviews?

No. There is no setting that removes your content from AI Overview consideration. You can, however, influence whether you are cited through structured, citation-worthy content.

What is the difference between an AI Overview and a Featured Snippet?

Featured Snippets are extracted directly from a single source page. AI Overviews are generated synthetically from multiple sources. Featured Snippets are older and more predictable; AI Overviews are newer and more variable.

What clients say about working with us.

“I've had the pleasure of working with Chris on several SEO projects for my websites in the health field. He was definitely been able to demystify things so that I felt able to make decisions with him and feel confident they were the right ones. For a non-techie, that is worth gold! I look forward to working with Chris again and warmly recommend him to anyone who - like me - is unsure about all things SEO.”

Biliana Avramova

Sandra Webber

“We've been working closely with Chris, Hannah and the team for over 12 months now. As a small company with ambitious growth plans, it was incredibly important that we made the right choice on who to trust with our SEO. 18 months later, we're totally thrilled with our experience so far and our growing online presence within our market. We'd happily recommend BTT and their services to other SMEs. Drop them an enquiry!”
