GlossaryDisavow File

Disavow File

A disavow file is a list of backlink URLs or domains you submit through Google Search Console asking Google to ignore them when ranking your site. It is rarely necessary in 2026, because Google's SpamBrain algorithm filters most low-quality links automatically. Reach for it only when you face an active manual penalty or a clear negative SEO attack.

Disavow File, explained properly.

•A disavow file is a plain text file listing URLs or domains, one per line, uploaded via Google Search Console's Disavow Tool.
•Google's SpamBrain algorithm now ignores most low-quality links automatically, so most sites never need to disavow.
•Disavowing legitimate links loses ranking signal, so only act on specific evidence like a manual penalty notice.
•Google can take weeks to fully process a submitted disavow file.

What a disavow file is

A disavow file tells search engines, Google in particular, that certain backlinks should not count toward how your site is assessed. The aim is to stop spammy, low-quality or toxic backlinks from causing penalties or ranking drops. It is a plain text (TXT) file listing the URLs or domains you want ignored, one entry per line, formatted to Google's submission requirements. Domain-level entries are prefixed with "domain:".

Why it is rarely needed in 2026

Google has said consistently that it discounts low-quality links automatically, and SpamBrain now identifies and ignores most of them without any action from you. For most sites, leaving links alone is safer than disavowing. The exception is an active manual penalty for unnatural links, or a clear negative SEO attack. If you are worried in general rather than responding to specific evidence, your time is better spent on positive SEO work.

How to create and submit one

1. **Identify harmful backlinks.** Use Google Search Console, Ahrefs and Majestic to review referring domains and flag spammy, irrelevant or low-quality links. 2. **Review and prioritise.** Check each link before disavowing. Links from sites with poor domain authority, irrelevant content or suspicious behaviour are the usual candidates. 3. **Create the file.** Build the plain text file with each URL or domain on its own line, correctly formatted. 4. **Submit to Google.** Upload through Google Search Console's Disavow Tool so Google no longer counts those backlinks. 5. **Monitor your profile.** Keep watching your backlink profile so new harmful links are caught and you can track ranking changes.

The risk of getting it wrong

Disavowing legitimate backlinks costs you ranking signal, which hits smaller backlink profiles hardest because each link there matters more. Common mistakes include disavowing good links, failing to monitor the profile afterwards, submitting an incorrectly formatted file, and waiting too long once you have genuine evidence of a problem. Only disavow with specific evidence, such as a manual penalty notice or an identifiable spam attack, rather than general worry.

Common questions

Disavow File: common questions.

Should I use a disavow file?

Rarely. Google's SpamBrain algorithm now identifies and ignores most low-quality links automatically. It is only useful with evidence of a manual penalty for unnatural links, or a clear negative SEO attack. For most sites, leaving links alone is safer than disavowing.

How do I submit a disavow file?

Submit through Google Search Console's Disavow Links tool. Upload a plain text file listing URLs and domains on separate lines, with domain entries prefixed by "domain:". Google takes weeks to fully process changes.

Can I damage my SEO by disavowing the wrong links?

Yes. Disavowing legitimate backlinks loses ranking signal, particularly for sites with smaller backlink profiles where each link contributes significantly. Only disavow with specific evidence, such as a manual penalty notice or identifiable spam attack, rather than general worry.

Is the disavow file still relevant in 2026?

Less than it used to be. Google has consistently said it discounts low-quality links automatically and most sites do not need to disavow. The exception remains active manual penalties and clear negative SEO cases. For everyone else, time is better spent on positive SEO work.

“I've had the pleasure of working with Chris on several SEO projects for my websites in the health field. He was definitely been able to demystify things so that I felt able to make decisions with him and feel confident they were the right ones. For a non-techie, that is worth gold! I look forward to working with Chris again and warmly recommend him to anyone who - like me - is unsure about all things SEO.”
