Geo Targeting, explained properly.
What geo-targeting is
Geo-targeting tailors your content or ads to a user's location. It uses IP, GPS or platform settings to detect where someone is, then shows them content relevant to that area. Done well it lifts conversion rates, because every visitor sees content built for them. For example, a Bristol gym only shows ads within ten miles of the studio and runs city-specific landing pages.
Why geo-targeting matters
- **More relevance.** Local users see local offers. - **Better PPC efficiency.** Ads only show in target areas, saving budget. - **Higher conversion.** Tailored content converts better than generic. - **Improved local search.** Geo-relevant content lifts local rankings, including appearance in the local pack.
How to use geo-targeting
1. **Define your target areas.** Pick the cities, regions or radii that match your business. A single coffee shop has a small radius; a multi-site retailer has broader targets. Map each target area to a dedicated location page where the SEO work happens. 2. **Create geo-specific content.** Build pages and offers tailored to each region, using local language, examples and landmarks where they fit. Avoid duplicate content across regional pages. 3. **Use geo-targeting in ads.** Google Ads, Meta and most ad platforms let you target by location. Set your radius, exclude areas you do not serve, and test variations. 4. **Set up local schema and Business Profile.** Use LocalBusiness schema and a complete Google Business Profile; both reinforce geo-relevance. The official setup guide is in the Google Business Profile Help centre, and the Moz Local SEO guide is a solid primer. 5. **Monitor and refine.** Track which areas convert best, move budget toward winners, and drop underperformers.
How geo-targeting affects SEO
It lifts local visibility because geo-targeted content ranks for area-specific queries, boosts conversion because localised offers beat generic ones, and improves PPC ROI because wasted spend drops when only your real audience sees ads.
Common mistakes
- Generic content with city tags slapped on, which search engines spot fast. - Bidding too broad, which wastes budget. - Skipping local schema and reviews, both of which reinforce real geo-relevance.

What clients say about working with us.
“I've had the pleasure of working with Chris on several SEO projects for my websites in the health field. He was definitely been able to demystify things so that I felt able to make decisions with him and feel confident they were the right ones. For a non-techie, that is worth gold! I look forward to working with Chris again and warmly recommend him to anyone who - like me - is unsure about all things SEO.”
