Google Analytics

Google Analytics (now GA4) is Google's free web analytics platform. It measures website and app traffic, user behaviour, conversion events, and the channels driving them. For SEO and PPC alike it is foundational, because without it you cannot measure whether your work is producing results.

What is Google Analytics?

Google Analytics is a free web analytics tool from Google that helps you track and analyse your website's traffic. It gives you insight into user behaviour, traffic sources, and how your website or online store performs. In short, it helps you understand who visits your site, what they do while they are there, and how they interact with your content. At BrisTechTonic we use Google Analytics to track metrics like traffic volume, conversion rates and user engagement, so we can refine SEO strategies and drive better results for clients. We pair it with Google Search Console to get the full picture of how organic search performs.

Why Google Analytics matters for SEO

Google Analytics is essential because it shows how well your SEO is performing: - **Track website traffic:** monitor how much traffic you get, so you can measure the success of your campaigns. - **Understand user behaviour:** see what users do on your site, which pages they visit, how long they stay, and where they drop off. This is invaluable for improving user experience and conversion rates. - **Identify high-performing pages:** understand which pages attract the most traffic and which need work. - **Measure goals and conversions:** set up goals to track how well the site turns visitors into leads or customers, a great measure of the return from your SEO.

How Google Analytics works

Google Analytics collects data through a small piece of JavaScript placed on your pages. That code sends data back to Google's servers, where it is processed and displayed in your account. The data collected includes: - **Traffic sources:** where visitors come from (organic search, paid search, social, direct, and more). - **User demographics:** age, location and interests. - **Behaviour data:** which pages users visit, how long they stay, and what actions they take. This is useful alongside impressions versus clicks data from Search Console. - **Conversion data:** how well the site turns visitors into leads or customers, if you have set up goals or ecommerce tracking.

Key features of Google Analytics

### Real-time analytics See what is happening on your site right now: active users, the pages they view, and where they came from. ### Audience insights Detailed reports on who visits, including demographics, interests, location and the devices used. ### Acquisition reports Show how visitors arrive, whether through organic search, paid ads, social or referrals, so you can see which channels drive the most traffic. ### Behaviour reports Track how users interact with your site: which pages they visit, how long they stay, and where they leave. ### Conversion tracking Track conversions, whether form submissions, purchases or other actions that matter to your business, so you can measure campaign effectiveness.

How to use Google Analytics for SEO

At BrisTechTonic we use Google Analytics to track key metrics and refine SEO strategies: - **Track organic traffic:** set up goals and track organic traffic to measure how well SEO drives visitors. - **Monitor bounce rate and engagement:** high bounce rates can mean a page is not meeting expectations, so we use this to improve content. - **Identify top landing pages:** find the pages attracting the most traffic and make sure they convert. - **Analyse search queries:** used with Search Console data, we analyse the queries bringing users in, which helps identify new keywords. - **Measure conversion rates:** track conversions and return from organic traffic, so effort goes where it works best.

Common Google Analytics mistakes

- **Not setting up goals:** without conversion goals you miss tracking key actions like form fills or purchases. - **Not using filters:** filters clean up your data, for example excluding internal traffic so the data reflects real visitors. - **Ignoring mobile performance:** track how the site performs on mobile and optimise for it. - **Not integrating with other tools:** connect Analytics with Search Console and Google Ads for a fuller picture.

Common questions

Google Analytics: common questions.

Is GA4 different from Universal Analytics?

Yes, fundamentally. Universal Analytics was retired in July 2023. GA4 uses an event-based model rather than a session-based one and integrates more deeply with BigQuery, plus it includes machine-learning insights by default. The reports look different and metrics are not always directly comparable to UA.

How do I install GA4?

Three options exist. Install the GA4 tag directly via your CMS's analytics setting (simplest), install via Google Tag Manager (most flexible), or have a developer hard-code the snippet (most control). All work, and Google Tag Manager is the modern standard for most sites.

Is GA4 free?

The standard version is free for businesses below 10 million events per month, which covers most small and medium businesses. Google Analytics 360, the paid enterprise version, is for very high-traffic sites and starts at six figures annually.

Is GA4 GDPR-compliant?

Out of the box, with caveats. GA4 includes IP anonymisation by default, but cookie-based tracking still requires user consent in EU and UK jurisdictions. Most setups need a consent management platform (CookieYes, Cookiebot, OneTrust) configured with consent mode to be fully compliant.

What clients say about working with us.

“I've had the pleasure of working with Chris on several SEO projects for my websites in the health field. He was definitely been able to demystify things so that I felt able to make decisions with him and feel confident they were the right ones. For a non-techie, that is worth gold! I look forward to working with Chris again and warmly recommend him to anyone who - like me - is unsure about all things SEO.”

Biliana Avramova

“I was recommended by my branding partner to use Chris and his team last year. I can’t recommend them highly enough. They are very responsive , easy to communicate with and great at translating techy stuff when needed. They are now an essential part of my business model”

Sandra Webber

“We've been working closely with Chris, Hannah and the team for over 12 months now. As a small company with ambitious growth plans, it was incredibly important that we made the right choice on who to trust with our SEO. 18 months later, we're totally thrilled with our experience so far and our growing online presence within our market. We'd happily recommend BTT and their services to other SMEs. Drop them an enquiry!”
