Google Search Console

Google Search Console (GSC) is Google's free webmaster tool. It shows how Google sees your site: which pages are indexed, what queries drive impressions and clicks, technical errors that block crawling, mobile usability issues, security warnings, and more.

What is Google Search Console?

Google Search Console (formerly Google Webmaster Tools) is a free tool from Google that helps you monitor, maintain and optimise your site's presence in Google search results. It gives you insight into how Google crawls, indexes and serves your content. Search Console helps you understand your site's performance, spot technical SEO issues and improve your ranking. At BrisTechTonic we use Search Console to gather data that fine-tunes SEO strategies for better rankings and conversions.

Why Google Search Console matters for SEO

Search Console is indispensable because it lets you: - **Track indexing status:** see which pages are indexed by Google and identify any with indexing issues. - **Monitor search performance:** see total clicks, impressions, CTR (click-through rate) and average position for specific keywords. - **Fix technical SEO issues:** identify crawling issues, broken links and other errors that hurt performance. - **Submit sitemaps:** submit your XML sitemap directly to Google so all your pages are crawled and indexed efficiently. - **Monitor mobile usability:** reports help ensure your site is mobile-friendly and optimised for mobile users. The official help centre lives on Search Console Help, and broader fundamentals sit in the Google Search Central docs.

How Google Search Console works

Search Console collects data from Googlebot (Google's crawler) as it visits and indexes your site. Once you set it up and verify your site, you can access: - **Crawl data:** how Googlebot crawls and indexes your site, including crawl stats. - **Search queries:** the keywords driving traffic and how well your pages rank for them. - **Links:** the external and internal links pointing to your site. - **Mobile usability:** how well your site performs on mobile and any issues to fix.

How to use Google Search Console for SEO

### 1. Monitor search performance We use the Performance report to track how a client's site performs in search, watching clicks, impressions, average position and CTR to find optimisation opportunities. ### 2. Check for crawl errors We check the Coverage report regularly to spot crawl errors or pages not being indexed. Fixing these ensures Google can crawl and index every relevant page. ### 3. Submit sitemaps We submit XML sitemaps so Googlebot can crawl and index all pages efficiently, which helps new content get discovered and indexed quickly. ### 4. Optimise mobile usability We use the Mobile Usability report to find mobile-friendly issues, since mobile traffic is essential and helps with mobile-first indexing. ### 5. Monitor backlinks Search Console shows which sites link to your pages. We use this to evaluate your backlink profile and find opportunities to build links or disavow harmful ones.

Common Google Search Console mistakes

- **Not submitting an XML sitemap:** without one, Google may miss important pages. Submit your sitemap regularly. - **Ignoring crawl errors:** crawl errors can hurt rankings, so check for them and fix them promptly. - **Not using the Performance report:** it is essential for spotting underperforming pages and improving strategy. - **Not verifying your site:** without verification you cannot access performance data and technical insights. Verify using an HTML file, DNS record or another method.

How we use Google Search Console at BrisTechTonic

- **Track organic search performance:** we monitor target keywords to stay on track. - **Fix crawl issues:** we identify and resolve crawl errors that stop Googlebot indexing important pages. - **Optimise mobile performance:** we monitor mobile usability reports to keep the site mobile-friendly.

Common questions

Google Search Console: common questions.

How do I set up Google Search Console?

Go to search.google.com/search-console, add your site as a property, and verify ownership using DNS verification (recommended), an HTML file upload, a meta tag, or Google Analytics integration. After verification, GSC starts collecting data and the first reports populate within a few days.

What are the most useful GSC reports?

Five matter most: Performance (queries, impressions, clicks, CTR, position), Coverage (indexed pages, errors, exclusions), Core Web Vitals (LCP, INP, CLS), Mobile Usability (mobile rendering issues), and URL Inspection (per-URL diagnostics). Performance and Coverage answer most day-to-day questions.

How often should I check GSC?

Weekly for active campaigns, monthly for stable sites. Sudden alerts (manual penalties, major coverage issues) trigger automatic email notifications. Set up email notifications so you do not miss critical issues even when you are not actively reviewing.

Is GSC the same as Google Analytics?

No, completely different. GSC shows data from Google's search index: how Google sees and ranks your site. GA4 shows data from your visitors: behaviour, conversion, audience. Both are essential and complementary; serious SEO uses both side by side.

“I've had the pleasure of working with Chris on several SEO projects for my websites in the health field. He was definitely been able to demystify things so that I felt able to make decisions with him and feel confident they were the right ones. For a non-techie, that is worth gold! I look forward to working with Chris again and warmly recommend him to anyone who - like me - is unsure about all things SEO.”

Biliana Avramova

“I was recommended by my branding partner to use Chris and his team last year. I can’t recommend them highly enough. They are very responsive , easy to communicate with and great at translating techy stuff when needed. They are now an essential part of my business model”

Sandra Webber

“We've been working closely with Chris, Hannah and the team for over 12 months now. As a small company with ambitious growth plans, it was incredibly important that we made the right choice on who to trust with our SEO. 18 months later, we're totally thrilled with our experience so far and our growing online presence within our market. We'd happily recommend BTT and their services to other SMEs. Drop them an enquiry!”
