GlossaryNoindex Tag

Noindex Tag

A noindex tag is an HTML instruction that tells search engines to crawl a page but keep it out of search results. You use it for pages that should not compete in rankings, such as thank-you pages, login screens, internal search results and other low-value URLs. The page is still visited by crawlers, it just never appears in the SERPs.

Common uses are thank-you pages, login screens, internal search results and temporary or seasonal pages.
It differs from a robots.txt disallow, which blocks crawling entirely rather than just indexing.
Do not use noindex as a substitute for fixing thin content, and take care not to noindex important pages by mistake.

Noindex Tag, explained properly.

•Noindex keeps a page out of search results while still allowing search engines to crawl it.
•Common uses are thank-you pages, login screens, internal search results and temporary or seasonal pages.
•It differs from a robots.txt disallow, which blocks crawling entirely rather than just indexing.
•Do not use noindex as a substitute for fixing thin content, and take care not to noindex important pages by mistake.

What is the noindex tag?

The noindex tag is an HTML meta tag used to tell search engines not to index a specific page. Pages with a noindex tag are still crawled, but they are excluded from search engine results pages. It is useful for duplicate content, outdated pages and low-value resources that you do not want competing in search.

Why use a noindex tag?

- **Prevent duplicate content.** Stops similar pages from competing against each other in rankings. - **Keep thin content out of search.** Prevents internal search results and login pages from wasting crawl budget. - **Exclude temporary pages.** Apply it to promotional landing pages or seasonal offers that should not rank long term. - **Control indexing of low-quality content.** Prevents affiliate-heavy pages with minimal original content from harming your site authority.

How to add a noindex tag

### 1. In HTML code Add the following to the `<head>` section of the page: ``` <meta name="robots" content="noindex"> ``` ### 2. Using a CMS or plugin Rank Math or Yoast SEO let you toggle noindex per page directly in the editor. ### 3. Using HTTP headers An `X-Robots-Tag: noindex` HTTP header is a valid option for dynamic content or APIs.

How to use noindex effectively

- Avoid overuse. Remove or merge poor content instead of hiding it. - Use it for duplicate pages to preserve crawl budget. - Do not accidentally noindex high-priority pages like blog posts or service pages. - Combine it with canonical tags and 301 redirects for a comprehensive duplicate-content solution.

How noindex impacts SEO

- The page will not appear in search results. - No link equity passes from the page to others. - Search engines still crawl the page, they just do not include it in rankings.

Common noindex tag mistakes

- Accidentally noindexing important pages. - Using noindex as a content-strategy crutch rather than fixing the content. - Failing to update redirects after noindexing pages that have external links.

Common questions

Noindex Tag: common questions.

How do I add a noindex tag?

Use the meta tag method by adding `<meta name="robots" content="noindex">` to the HTML head, or use an HTTP header of `X-Robots-Tag: noindex`. The meta tag is more common and is usually set via a CMS toggle.

Should I noindex thin or low-quality pages?

It is usually better to improve or merge the content. Noindex prevents ranking but does not fix the underlying thin-content issue. Use it when pages genuinely should not rank, such as login pages or filter results.

What is the difference between noindex and a robots.txt disallow?

Noindex tells Google to crawl the page but not index it. A robots.txt disallow tells Google not to crawl the page at all. A disallow can leave pages indexed when noindexing was actually intended.

How long does noindex take to work?

Days to weeks, because Google must recrawl the page first. You can use Search Console's URL Inspection tool to speed up recrawling, and pages typically drop within one to two weeks.

“I've had the pleasure of working with Chris on several SEO projects for my websites in the health field. He was definitely been able to demystify things so that I felt able to make decisions with him and feel confident they were the right ones. For a non-techie, that is worth gold! I look forward to working with Chris again and warmly recommend him to anyone who - like me - is unsure about all things SEO.”
