On-Page SEO

On-page SEO is everything you optimise directly on a webpage to help search engines understand it and rank it for relevant searches. That means content, title tags, meta descriptions, headings, internal links, alt text, URLs and structured data, all the elements you can edit on the page itself. It is fully within your control, unlike off-page signals such as backlinks.

On-Page SEO, explained properly.

•On-page SEO is everything you control on your own page: content, HTML and structure.
•The title tag is the single most important on-page signal.
•On-page differs from off-page SEO (external signals like backlinks) and technical SEO (site infrastructure).
•It is an ongoing discipline, not a one-off project, and should be refreshed on a rolling basis.

What is on-page SEO?

On-page SEO refers to all the optimisations you make directly on a webpage, the content, HTML and structure, to help search engines understand what the page is about and rank it higher for relevant searches. If technical SEO is a house's foundation and off-page SEO is its neighbourhood reputation, on-page SEO is the interior: its organisation, clarity and usefulness.

Key on-page SEO elements

- **Meta title.** The clickable headline in search results. Include your target keyword. - **Meta description.** The summary below the title. It should encourage clicks. - **Header tags.** An H1, H2 and H3 structure helps Google understand your content hierarchy. - **Keyword placement.** Use the target keyword naturally in headings, the intro and the body. - **Internal linking.** Connect pages with relevant anchor text. - **URL structure.** Short, descriptive, keyword-rich URLs. - **Image alt text.** Descriptive text for all images. - **Content quality and depth.** Comprehensive, accurate content that satisfies search intent.

On-page vs off-page SEO

On-page SEO is everything you control on your own site. Off-page SEO covers external signals, mainly backlinks and brand mentions from other sites.

On-page vs technical SEO

Technical SEO addresses infrastructure such as speed, crawlability and indexation. On-page SEO focuses on individual page content and HTML elements. Both are essential.

The core on-page SEO elements

1. **Title tag.** The single most important on-page signal. Include the focus keyword early and stay under 60 characters. 2. **Meta description.** It does not directly affect rankings but heavily influences click-through rate. Aim for 150 to 160 characters, include the keyword and give a reason to click. 3. **H1 heading.** One per page, including the focus keyword naturally. 4. **Body content.** Topical depth, related vocabulary and real expertise. Length should match user intent rather than a fixed word count. 5. **Internal links.** Link to relevant related content using descriptive anchor text. 6. **Image alt text.** Describe images naturally and include keywords where genuinely relevant. 7. **URL structure.** Short, descriptive, includes the focus keyword and uses hyphens. 8. **Schema markup.** Structured data that unlocks rich snippets and helps AI search cite the page.

What on-page SEO is not

- Keyword stuffing - Hidden text - Doorway pages - Cloaking, showing different content to bots than to users - Manipulative anchor text All of these were once considered on-page SEO but now actively damage rankings.

Common questions

On-Page SEO: common questions.

Which on-page element matters most?

The title tag, by a clear margin. It is both a direct ranking signal and the headline users see in search results. The H1 and first 200 words of body content also carry significant weight for both ranking and AI search citations.

How is on-page SEO different from off-page SEO?

On-page covers page content, structure and metadata. Off-page includes backlinks, brand mentions, social signals and third-party reviews. On-page is fully controllable, while off-page is mostly earned over time.

Can I do on-page SEO myself?

Yes. The basics are accessible using tools like Yoast and Rank Math for title and meta optimisation. Content depth, internal linking strategy and schema implementation benefit from experience or specialist help.

How often should I update on-page SEO?

On a rolling basis, not as a one-off project. New content should be optimised during creation, and existing pages benefit from periodic refreshes, typically every 6 to 12 months for important pages.

“I've had the pleasure of working with Chris on several SEO projects for my websites in the health field. He was definitely been able to demystify things so that I felt able to make decisions with him and feel confident they were the right ones. For a non-techie, that is worth gold! I look forward to working with Chris again and warmly recommend him to anyone who - like me - is unsure about all things SEO.”

Biliana Avramova

“We've been working closely with Chris, Hannah and the team for over 12 months now. As a small company with ambitious growth plans, it was incredibly important that we made the right choice on who to trust with our SEO. 18 months later, we're totally thrilled with our experience so far and our growing online presence within our market. We'd happily recommend BTT and their services to other SMEs. Drop them an enquiry!”
