GlossaryRetrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG)

Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG)

Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) is how Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT search and Perplexity work. They first search an index for relevant pages, then use those pages as source material when writing the answer. Because the answer is grounded in real sources, your SEO directly affects which sources get used and cited.

In depth

Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), explained properly.

•RAG powers modern AI search: it retrieves relevant documents, then generates an answer grounded in them.
•The three steps are retrieve, augment and generate.
•RAG retrieval relies on search engine indexing, so strong technical SEO helps you get retrieved.
•AI answers pull from many source types, so presence beyond your own website matters.

What is retrieval-augmented generation?

RAG is the underlying technique for modern AI search tools. The system retrieves relevant documents from a search index, then uses them as context when generating a response. This makes answers grounded in real sources, which means SEO directly affects which sources get used. When your site appears in an AI Overview citation, it was retrieved as a trustworthy source.

How RAG works

1. **Retrieve.** The system searches an index for documents relevant to the query. 2. **Augment.** Retrieved documents are added to the AI model's prompt as context. 3. **Generate.** The AI generates a response with citations to its sources. Topical authority matters increasingly here, and crawler rules for AI agents, such as the OpenAI GPTBot docs, are increasingly part of the SEO toolkit.

Where RAG pulls its sources

RAG systems retrieve from multiple source types: - Your website, via technical SEO - Local data, such as Google Business Profile, citations and the local pack - Forums, especially Reddit - Reviews, such as Google Reviews, Trustpilot and niche platforms - Q&A sites, such as Quora and Stack Exchange - Video transcripts on YouTube - Social posts on X and LinkedIn - Press coverage and editorial mentions Brands cited inside AI answers tend to have a substantive presence across several of those sources, not just on their own websites.

Common questions

Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG): common questions.

Is RAG the same as ChatGPT?

No. RAG is a technique, while ChatGPT is a product that uses RAG. Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot and Gemini all use RAG with different implementations.

How does RAG differ from a regular AI chatbot?

Regular chatbots use only their training data. RAG systems retrieve current information from a live search index before generating answers, making them more accurate, current and citation-aware.

Can I optimise my site for RAG retrieval?

Yes. RAG retrieval uses search engine indexing, so strong technical SEO, content structure, schema markup and topical authority help your content surface during retrieval.

Why is presence beyond my website important for RAG?

Because RAG systems retrieve from multiple source types. A brand that appears only on its own website has fewer entry points into the AI's retrieval set than a brand present across multiple sources.

“I've had the pleasure of working with Chris on several SEO projects for my websites in the health field. He was definitely been able to demystify things so that I felt able to make decisions with him and feel confident they were the right ones. For a non-techie, that is worth gold! I look forward to working with Chris again and warmly recommend him to anyone who - like me - is unsure about all things SEO.”

Biliana Avramova

“I was recommended by my branding partner to use Chris and his team last year. I can’t recommend them highly enough. They are very responsive , easy to communicate with and great at translating techy stuff when needed. They are now an essential part of my business model”

Sandra Webber

“We've been working closely with Chris, Hannah and the team for over 12 months now. As a small company with ambitious growth plans, it was incredibly important that we made the right choice on who to trust with our SEO. 18 months later, we're totally thrilled with our experience so far and our growing online presence within our market. We'd happily recommend BTT and their services to other SMEs. Drop them an enquiry!”
