Broad Match, explained properly.
What is broad match?
Broad match is the default keyword match type in Google Ads and the widest-reaching of the three main types. When you use broad match, your ad can appear for searches that relate to your keyword, including synonyms, closely related concepts, and searches that Google infers share the same intent, even if they do not contain the exact words. For example, a broad match keyword of "kitchen fitter" might trigger "kitchen installation company", "kitchen renovation contractor Bristol", or "kitchen remodelling services".
The risk with broad match
Without robust negative keywords, broad match campaigns frequently bleed budget on searches with nothing to do with what you offer.
When broad match works well
- Combined with Smart Bidding, Google uses conversion data to show ads only for queries likely to convert. - Keyword discovery, identifying new relevant search variations. - Larger budgets with sufficient conversion data to guide the algorithm.
How broad match has changed
Modern broad match (post-2021) considers: - The keyword's meaning rather than its exact words - The user's recent search activity - The content of your landing pages - Your other keywords and ads in the campaign Combined with Smart Bidding, broad match can outperform tighter match types because the algorithm has more variation to optimise from. Without Smart Bidding, broad match typically wastes budget.
When to use broad match
- Paired with Smart Bidding (Maximise Conversions, Target CPA, Target ROAS). - In mature accounts with extensive negative keyword lists already filtering out irrelevant terms. - For discovery: revealing new query patterns you have not targeted with phrase or exact match yet.
When to avoid broad match
- Manual bidding: broad match without algorithmic adjustment typically burns budget. - New campaigns without conversion data: Smart Bidding cannot optimise effectively. - Tightly defined commercial keywords where intent matters more than reach. Broad match works as a tactical tool, not as a default. We use it deliberately when the data and Smart Bidding setup justify it, as part of our PPC service.
Broad Match: common questions.
Is broad match the default match type?
Yes. New keywords default to broad match unless you specify otherwise (square brackets for exact, quotes for phrase). This is a recent change; for years phrase match was the safer default. Now Google deliberately pushes broad match because it generates more inventory for the auction.
Will broad match keywords show on completely unrelated searches?
Less than they used to, but it can happen. The Search Terms report reveals exactly which queries broad match keywords are matching. Reviewing weekly is essential; without negatives, broad match can waste budget on tangential searches.
Should I use broad match in new accounts?
Generally no. New accounts lack the conversion data Smart Bidding needs to make broad match work. Start with phrase or exact match for the first few weeks, gather conversion data, then test broad match once Smart Bidding has something to learn from.
How is modern broad match different from broad match modifier?
Broad match modifier (BMM) was deprecated in 2021 and folded into phrase match. Modern broad match is broader than BMM ever was; it considers user behaviour, your account context, and landing page content beyond just the keyword itself.

“I've had the pleasure of working with Chris on several SEO projects for my websites in the health field. He was definitely been able to demystify things so that I felt able to make decisions with him and feel confident they were the right ones. For a non-techie, that is worth gold! I look forward to working with Chris again and warmly recommend him to anyone who - like me - is unsure about all things SEO.”
