Campaign (PPC), explained properly.

What is a PPC campaign?

In Google Ads, a campaign is the top-level container that defines the fundamental settings for your advertising. Your daily budget, bidding strategy, geographic targeting, and ad network all sit at campaign level.

Types of Google Ads campaign

- **Search campaigns:** Text ads on Google Search results pages, the most common type for lead generation. - **Display campaigns:** Image and banner ads across the Google Display Network. - **Shopping campaigns:** Product listing ads for ecommerce. - **Video campaigns:** Ads on YouTube and other video placements. - **Performance Max:** Google's all-in-one campaign type across all channels.

What lives at the campaign level

- **Budget.** Daily spending limit. - **Bidding strategy.** Manual CPC, Maximise Conversions, Target CPA, Target ROAS, and others. - **Targeting.** Location, language, device, audience. - **Ad schedule.** Days of week and times of day to run. - **Network settings.** Whether ads run on Search, Display, Search partners, and so on. - **Conversion goals.** Which conversions this campaign optimises towards. Always run brand keyword campaigns separately from non-brand. They have different CPCs, quality dynamics, and require different bidding approaches.

How many campaigns should an account have?

It depends on the business. Common structural decisions: - **One campaign per major goal.** Brand defence, lead generation, retargeting, and ecommerce sales each get their own campaign with their own budget and bidding strategy. - **Separate campaigns by location** if you have very different bid strategies or budgets per market. - **Separate campaigns by network** (Search vs Display vs YouTube) so each gets its own performance baseline. - **Separate campaigns by product or service line** when budgets, goals, or seasonality differ enough to warrant the split. Campaign structure is one of those PPC decisions that compounds over months. Get it right early and every other piece of work gets easier. It is one of the first things we set up in our PPC management service.

Common questions

Campaign (PPC): common questions.

How many campaigns do I need?

Enough to give each major goal its own budget and bidding strategy, but not so many that any one campaign starves of data. For a small business, 3 to 6 campaigns is typical: a brand campaign, one or two acquisition campaigns, a retargeting campaign, and possibly a separate brand-awareness campaign.

Should every product have its own campaign?

Usually no. The right level for product separation is the ad group, not the campaign. One campaign with multiple themed ad groups (one per product line) gives you efficient budget sharing and cleaner reporting than one campaign per product.

Can I copy a campaign?

Yes. The Google Ads UI has a copy function (and Google Ads Editor makes bulk copying easier). Useful when launching a similar campaign for a new market, season, or product line. Make sure to update locations, ad copy, and targeting after copying.

What is the difference between a campaign and an ad group?

Settings and budget live at the campaign level. Themed keyword groups and the ads that target them live at the ad group level. A campaign holds many ad groups; an ad group holds keywords and ads.

“I've had the pleasure of working with Chris on several SEO projects for my websites in the health field. He was definitely been able to demystify things so that I felt able to make decisions with him and feel confident they were the right ones. For a non-techie, that is worth gold! I look forward to working with Chris again and warmly recommend him to anyone who - like me - is unsure about all things SEO.”

Biliana Avramova

“I was recommended by my branding partner to use Chris and his team last year. I can’t recommend them highly enough. They are very responsive , easy to communicate with and great at translating techy stuff when needed. They are now an essential part of my business model”

Sandra Webber

“We've been working closely with Chris, Hannah and the team for over 12 months now. As a small company with ambitious growth plans, it was incredibly important that we made the right choice on who to trust with our SEO. 18 months later, we're totally thrilled with our experience so far and our growing online presence within our market. We'd happily recommend BTT and their services to other SMEs. Drop them an enquiry!”
