What is conversion rate in PPC?

Conversion rate in PPC is the percentage of clicks on your ad that go on to complete a conversion action. Conversion Rate = Conversions divided by Clicks, multiplied by 100. If 100 people click your ad and 4 submit an enquiry form, your conversion rate is 4 percent.

Why conversion rate is so important

Conversion rate is the multiplier that determines your cost per acquisition. If your CPC is £2: - At 2 percent conversion rate, your CPA is £100 - At 4 percent conversion rate, your CPA is £50 - At 8 percent conversion rate, your CPA is £25 Doubling conversion rate halves your cost per lead, the same effect as halving your CPC. This is why landing page optimisation is just as important as bid management.

How conversion rate is calculated

The formula: (conversions divided by clicks) multiplied by 100. If a campaign got 1,000 clicks and produced 30 conversions, the conversion rate is 3 percent.

What is a good conversion rate?

Industry benchmarks (Google Ads, search campaigns): - **Ecommerce:** 2 to 5 percent typical - **Lead generation B2B:** 3 to 8 percent typical - **Local services:** 4 to 10 percent typical - **SaaS sign-ups:** 5 to 15 percent typical Brand campaigns convert at 10 percent or more. Display and YouTube convert under 1 percent. Compare like-for-like.

How to improve conversion rate

1. **Sharper landing pages.** Match landing page content to the ad copy and search intent. Generic homepages lose against specific service or product pages. 2. **Faster page speed.** Every additional second of load time costs roughly 7 percent of conversions. 3. **Clearer CTAs.** One primary action per page, prominent above the fold, repeated through the page. 4. **Trust signals.** Reviews, testimonials, security badges, recognisable logos, and clear contact information. 5. **Friction reduction.** Shorter forms, fewer required fields, single-page checkouts. Other levers include matching the landing page headline to the ad that sent the user there, improving mobile page speed, and A/B testing different layouts, offers, and copy. Conversion rate optimisation is a key part of the PPC management service.

Common questions

Conversion Rate (PPC): common questions.

What is the difference between conversion rate and click-through rate?

CTR is the percentage of impressions that lead to a click. Conversion rate is the percentage of clicks that lead to a conversion. CTR measures listing effectiveness; conversion rate measures landing page and offer effectiveness.

Should I optimise for conversion rate or volume?

Both, but in the right order. Volume without acceptable conversion rate burns budget. Conversion rate without volume produces statistically unreliable results. Get conversion rate to a reasonable baseline first; then push for volume.

Can a conversion rate be too high?

Rarely, but yes. A conversion rate above 30 percent in a normal Google Ads search campaign usually signals that the conversion definition is too soft (counting newsletter signups instead of real customers, for example). Reset the conversion definition before celebrating.

How long do I need to track conversion rate before trusting it?

Statistical significance depends on volume. Below 100 conversions, the rate is too noisy to act on. 200 to 500 conversions gives a stable read. For most accounts, two to four weeks is the minimum reasonable window.

“I've had the pleasure of working with Chris on several SEO projects for my websites in the health field. He was definitely been able to demystify things so that I felt able to make decisions with him and feel confident they were the right ones. For a non-techie, that is worth gold! I look forward to working with Chris again and warmly recommend him to anyone who - like me - is unsure about all things SEO.”
