Conversion Tracking, explained properly.
What is conversion tracking?
Conversion tracking is the technical setup that allows Google Ads to record when someone who clicked your ad goes on to complete a valuable action, submitting a form, making a call, completing a purchase, or any other goal you define. Without conversion tracking, all you can measure is clicks. With it, you can measure cost per lead, cost per sale, and return on ad spend. It is the difference between running PPC with your eyes open and closed.
How conversion tracking works
Google Ads places a small piece of code (a tag) on your website, either directly or via Google Tag Manager. When a user who came from an ad completes a conversion action such as landing on a thank-you page after submitting a form, the tag fires and records the conversion in your Google Ads account.
Setting up conversion tracking
- **Google Ads tag:** A global site tag plus a conversion-specific event tag, placed in your site's code or via Google Tag Manager. - **Google Analytics import:** Import GA4 goals into Google Ads, useful but less accurate than direct tracking. - **Phone call tracking:** Google provides a forwarding number that tracks calls from ads. - **Ecommerce tracking:** Pass transaction values from your checkout to Google Ads. Three common methods, in order of robustness: 1. **Google Tag Manager:** the modern standard. One snippet on the site, all conversions managed inside Tag Manager. Easiest to maintain and most flexible. 2. **Direct Google Ads tag:** a simpler implementation that places conversion tags directly on success pages. Works fine but harder to manage at scale. 3. **Google Ads plus GA4 import:** if you already track conversions in GA4, you can import them into Google Ads as a unified source of truth.
Enhanced Conversions
Enhanced Conversions is Google's privacy-safe way to improve conversion measurement by passing hashed first-party data to Google when a conversion occurs. It improves data accuracy as cookies become more restricted. Setting up accurate conversion tracking is the very first task in our PPC management service. It is the foundation everything else is built on.
What counts as a conversion?
A conversion is any user action that has business value. The most commonly tracked conversions are: - **Form submissions:** contact forms, quote requests, callback bookings. - **Phone calls:** tracked via call extensions or website call tracking. - **Online purchases:** with revenue values attached for ecommerce. - **Bookings or appointments:** completed via a calendar tool or booking page. - **Email signups, downloads, video views:** lower-value but useful soft conversions. Most accounts should track multiple conversion types and assign different values to each. A form submission worth £200 in average customer value is a more important conversion than a newsletter signup worth £5.
Common conversion tracking mistakes
- **Not tracking phone calls.** For service businesses, phone calls often outnumber form fills. If they are not tracked, you have no idea which campaigns drive them. - **Counting the same conversion twice.** Pixel firing on every page reload, or both GA4 and Google Ads counting independently, double-counts conversions. - **No conversion value.** Without a value, every conversion looks identical. Smart Bidding cannot optimise for revenue if revenue is not tracked. - **Tracking soft conversions as primary.** Newsletter signups should not drive bidding strategy. Reserve primary conversions for actions with real business value.
Conversion Tracking: common questions.
Why is conversion tracking so important?
Without it, you cannot run modern Google Ads campaigns effectively. Smart Bidding strategies (Maximise Conversions, Target CPA, Target ROAS) all depend on conversion data.
How do I track phone calls from Google Ads?
Two methods. Google's built-in call extensions track calls placed directly from the ad. For calls from your website after a click, use Google's website call tracking which dynamically swaps your number for a Google forwarding number, then attributes the call to the originating ad click.
Should I use GA4 or Google Ads for conversion tracking?
Either works, but pick one as the source of truth. GA4 is more powerful for cross-channel attribution; Google Ads is simpler if all your traffic is paid search. Many accounts now track in GA4 and import the conversions into Google Ads, giving them one consistent view.
How long after a click can a conversion be tracked?
Google Ads conversion windows default to 30 days for most conversion types, with longer windows possible for some.
