Cost Per Click (CPC), explained properly.
What is cost per click (CPC)?
Cost per click is the amount you pay Google every time someone clicks on your ad. It shapes how far your budget stretches. You rarely pay your maximum bid on every click. Instead you usually pay your actual CPC, which the ad auction works out and often lands below your maximum.
Maximum CPC vs actual CPC
- **Maximum CPC:** the highest amount you are willing to pay for a click, set manually or through an automated bidding strategy. - **Actual CPC:** the amount you are actually charged, decided by the ad auction and usually lower than your maximum.
What drives CPC?
- **Auction competition:** the more advertisers bidding on a keyword, the higher the CPC. - **Quality Score:** a higher score lowers your CPC at the same position. - **Ad Rank thresholds:** the minimum Google requires before your ad shows. - **Match type:** exact match keywords typically cost more than their broad match equivalents. - **Industry:** legal, financial and insurance keywords are among the most expensive in the UK. - **Time and place:** CPCs shift by hour, day of the week and location.
CPC and your bottom line
CPC feeds directly into your cost per acquisition. Bring your average CPC down and, all else being equal, your cost per lead falls with it: same budget, same effort, more leads. Our PPC work focuses on reducing average CPC through Quality Score improvements and careful bid management.
How to lower CPC without losing volume
1. **Improve Quality Score:** tighter ad groups, relevant copy and better landing pages. 2. **Add ad extensions:** sitelinks, callouts and structured snippets improve Ad Rank without raising bids. 3. **Use long-tail keywords:** lower competition, lower CPC and often higher intent. 4. **Schedule strategically:** reduce bids during low-conversion times when the data supports it. 5. **Test landing pages:** better conversion rates make every click work harder. Lowering CPC is rarely the goal in itself. The goal is lowering CPA, so we optimise toward customer outcomes rather than vanity click metrics.
Cost Per Click (CPC): common questions.
What is a good CPC?
It depends on your industry. Local services often sit at 1 to 10 pounds per click. B2B and legal can run from 20 to over 100 pounds. Insurance and finance routinely exceed 50 pounds. The right benchmark is your customer lifetime value: any CPC that produces a profitable CPA is acceptable.
CPC vs CPA, which matters more?
CPA matters more. CPC is just one input. A campaign with low CPC and a poor conversion rate has a high CPA, while a campaign with higher CPC but a much better conversion rate has a lower CPA. Always optimise toward CPA, not CPC.
Why is my CPC suddenly higher?
Common causes include new competitors entering the auction, a Quality Score drop (often from landing page issues), seasonal demand spikes, or unintended changes to match types or bidding strategy. Check your Auction Insights report for competitor shifts.
Can I cap CPC?
Manual CPC bidding gives you a direct maximum CPC control. Smart Bidding strategies like Maximise Conversions or Target CPA do not expose a direct CPC control because the algorithm chooses CPC based on conversion likelihood, though you can limit it indirectly with bid limits.
