Display Network

The Google Display Network (GDN) is Google's network of partner websites, apps, YouTube channels and Google-owned properties where image, banner and video ads can run. It works best for remarketing and awareness rather than capturing active demand.

Display Network, explained properly.

What is the Google Display Network?

The Google Display Network is made up of over two million websites, apps and Google-owned properties including YouTube and Gmail, reaching roughly 90% of internet users globally. Display advertising works differently from Search. Search reaches people who are actively looking for what you offer. Display reaches people who are busy doing something else.

Display vs Search, the intent difference

- **Search:** pull marketing, where users actively seek you out. - **Display:** push marketing, reaching users who are not actively searching. Display typically achieves lower click-through rates (0.1% to 0.5%) and lower direct conversion intent. It works best for brand awareness, remarketing and staying visible with warm audiences.

What the Display Network includes

- Over two million websites in the AdSense and Ad Exchange networks. - YouTube, with banner and video formats. - Google-owned properties: Gmail, the Discover feed and Google News. - Mobile apps in the AdMob network.

When Display works well

- **Retargeting:** showing ads to previous visitors, the highest-converting use case. - **Awareness:** building recognition before people search directly. - **Audience targeting:** reaching people by interests, demographics or in-market signals when search volume is low. - **Visual brands:** products where how something looks really matters.

When Display underdelivers

- Direct-response use without clear targeting, producing low conversion rates. - Generic or text-only creative. - Budgets too small for the audience size. - Attribution set to last-click when Display assists rather than directly converts.

Avoiding Display waste

Review the Placements report regularly and exclude underperforming sites so your ads do not drift onto irrelevant placements. We use Display selectively, mainly for remarketing rather than cold prospecting.

Common questions

Display Network: common questions.

Should I run Display campaigns alongside Search?

Generally yes, with different objectives. Search captures active demand while Display creates demand and reaches people earlier in the journey. Most accounts benefit from both, with Display getting a smaller budget and different measurement such as assisted conversions, view-through and brand search lift.

Why are my Display CTRs so low?

Display CTRs typically range from 0.05% to 0.5%, far lower than Search at 2% to 10%. That is normal because Display ads interrupt browsing rather than answer an active search. Compare Display to display benchmarks: under 0.1% is weak, 0.5% or higher is strong.

How do I prevent Display from wasting budget?

Three controls: tight audience targeting rather than broad keyword targeting, placement exclusions to block low-quality sites like mobile games and made-for-ads pages, and conversion-focused bidding such as Maximise Conversions or Target CPA rather than Maximise Clicks.

Is Display the same as Performance Max?

No. The Display Network is one channel. Performance Max is multi-channel, including Display, Search, YouTube, Gmail and Discover. Standalone Display campaigns give you more control, while Performance Max trades control for cross-channel reach.

What clients say about working with us.

“I've had the pleasure of working with Chris on several SEO projects for my websites in the health field. He was definitely been able to demystify things so that I felt able to make decisions with him and feel confident they were the right ones. For a non-techie, that is worth gold! I look forward to working with Chris again and warmly recommend him to anyone who - like me - is unsure about all things SEO.”

Biliana Avramova

“I was recommended by my branding partner to use Chris and his team last year. I can’t recommend them highly enough. They are very responsive , easy to communicate with and great at translating techy stuff when needed. They are now an essential part of my business model”

Sandra Webber

“We've been working closely with Chris, Hannah and the team for over 12 months now. As a small company with ambitious growth plans, it was incredibly important that we made the right choice on who to trust with our SEO. 18 months later, we're totally thrilled with our experience so far and our growing online presence within our market. We'd happily recommend BTT and their services to other SMEs. Drop them an enquiry!”
