Manual CPC, explained properly.
What is Manual CPC?
Manual CPC is a Google Ads bidding strategy where you set a specific maximum bid for each keyword yourself. Unlike Smart Bidding, Google does not adjust your bids automatically based on conversion data, so you remain fully in control.
When Manual CPC makes sense
- **New accounts with limited data:** Smart Bidding needs conversion history to work well, and without it automated strategies can overspend or underspend wildly. - **Very low conversion volume:** fewer than 20 to 30 conversions a month means the algorithm lacks enough signal, and Manual CPC often outperforms. - **Tight cost control on specific terms:** when you need to cap CPC on individual keywords precisely. - **Brand campaigns:** competition is low, you know your value, and bids rarely need much adjustment. Conversion intent is so high that Smart Bidding sometimes overbids to capture marginal volume. - **New campaigns gathering data:** two to four weeks of Manual CPC produces conversion data that Smart Bidding can then learn from.
When Manual CPC underperforms
- Mature accounts with steady conversion volume, where Smart Bidding wins. - Time-strapped account managers, because Manual CPC needs constant attention. - Accounts where conversion value varies widely, which Smart Bidding's value-based strategies handle far better.
Limitations of Manual CPC
- It is labour-intensive, because every keyword needs individual attention. - It misses real-time signals Google can factor in, such as device, time and audience intent. - It can underperform Smart Bidding once conversion data is strong enough.
Enhanced CPC: a middle ground that has gone
Enhanced CPC was a hybrid: you set the base bid and Google raised or lowered it by up to 30% based on conversion likelihood. Google deprecated Enhanced CPC in 2024, so it is no longer available. The choice now is Manual CPC for full control or Smart Bidding for full automation.
Manual CPC: common questions.
Should I use Manual CPC for new campaigns?
Often yes, to begin with. Run Manual CPC for two to four weeks while you gather conversion data. Once you have 30 or more conversions a month, switch to Maximise Conversions or Target CPA.
Why is Manual CPC less popular in 2026?
Smart Bidding has improved enough to outperform manual bidding in most accounts. Google's algorithms factor in dozens of real-time signals such as device, time, audience and intent that no human can manually adjust for.
Can I mix Manual CPC and Smart Bidding in one account?
Yes, at the campaign level. A brand campaign could use Manual CPC while an acquisition campaign uses Target CPA.
Does Manual CPC affect Quality Score?
Not directly, though it can indirectly through click-through rate. Quality Score is calculated the same way regardless of bidding strategy.
“I've had the pleasure of working with Chris on several SEO projects for my websites in the health field. He was definitely been able to demystify things so that I felt able to make decisions with him and feel confident they were the right ones. For a non-techie, that is worth gold! I look forward to working with Chris again and warmly recommend him to anyone who - like me - is unsure about all things SEO.”
“I was recommended by my branding partner to use Chris and his team last year. I can’t recommend them highly enough. They are very responsive , easy to communicate with and great at translating techy stuff when needed. They are now an essential part of my business model”
“We've been working closely with Chris, Hannah and the team for over 12 months now.
