Smart Bidding, explained properly.

•Smart Bidding adjusts your bid for every single search based on signals like device, location, time of day, user behaviour, and search query context.
•Core strategies include Target CPA, Target ROAS, Maximise Conversions, and Maximise Conversion Value.
•Starting or changing a Smart Bidding strategy triggers a learning period of roughly 1 to 2 weeks (typically 2 to 4 weeks to optimise) during which performance can fluctuate.
•Smart Bidding performs best with at least 30 conversions per month per campaign.
•For newer accounts, Manual CPC is often more reliable while you build conversion history.

What is Smart Bidding?

Smart Bidding is Google's suite of automated bidding strategies that use machine learning to set bids in real time at the moment of each auction. Rather than a fixed bid, Smart Bidding adjusts your bid for every single search based on dozens of signals: device, location, time of day, user behaviour, search query context, and more. Think of it as having an analyst watching every auction 24 hours a day and adjusting your bids based on whether a given click is likely to convert.

The Smart Bidding strategies

- **[Target CPA](/ppc-glossary/target-cpa):** optimises bids to get conversions at your target cost per acquisition. - **[Target ROAS](/ppc-glossary/target-roas):** optimises to maximise conversion value at a target return on ad spend. - **Maximise Conversions:** spends your full budget to get as many conversions as possible. - **Maximise Conversion Value:** focuses on total revenue from conversions. - **Maximise Clicks:** older, click-focused (not strictly Smart Bidding but similar).

The learning period

When you start or change a Smart Bidding strategy, the campaign enters a learning period of roughly 1 to 2 weeks. Performance can fluctuate. Avoid making major changes during this period.

What Smart Bidding needs to work

1. **Reliable conversion tracking.** Smart Bidding is only as good as the data it learns from. 2. **Sufficient conversion volume.** Below 30 conversions per month, the algorithm cannot stabilise. 3. **Stable account configuration.** Frequent budget or targeting changes reset the learning. 4. **Realistic targets.** Targets dramatically below historic CPA or above historic ROAS cause underperformance.

When it works, and when it does not

Smart Bidding performs best with at least 30 conversions per month per campaign. For newer accounts, [Manual CPC](/ppc-glossary/manual-cpc) is often more reliable while you build conversion history. Our [PPC management service](/services/ppc-packages) monitors the learning period closely and sets appropriate targets based on historic account data.

Common questions

Smart Bidding: common questions.

Is Smart Bidding better than manual bidding?

For most accounts in 2026, yes, with caveats. Smart Bidding uses far more real-time signals than any human can manually adjust to. The exceptions are very low conversion volume accounts (where Smart Bidding cannot learn) and specialist B2B accounts with very specific bid logic that does not map to Google's strategies.

How long does Smart Bidding take to optimise?

Two to four weeks typically. During this learning phase, performance can swing as the algorithm explores. Avoid making major changes during this window unless something is clearly broken.

Does Smart Bidding work without conversion tracking?

Maximise Clicks works without conversion data, optimising for click volume. Every other Smart Bidding strategy requires reliable conversion tracking, ideally with conversion values for value-based strategies.

Should I run multiple Smart Bidding strategies in one account?

Yes, often the right approach. Brand campaigns might use Manual CPC for cost control, acquisition campaigns Target CPA, and ecommerce Performance Max with Target ROAS. Each campaign goal calls for the strategy that fits it.

“I've had the pleasure of working with Chris on several SEO projects for my websites in the health field. He was definitely been able to demystify things so that I felt able to make decisions with him and feel confident they were the right ones. For a non-techie, that is worth gold! I look forward to working with Chris again and warmly recommend him to anyone who - like me - is unsure about all things SEO.”
